How to hide the Reddit home feed

You subscribe to three useful communities and Reddit still hands you an infinite feed every time you open it. There is no switch for that. These three methods give you one.

Why there is no simple switch

Reddit's home and popular pages are its front door and it has no setting to close it. You can go straight to the subreddits you want, but a bookmark is a workaround, not a fix, and the feed is always one click away.

1. The built-in workaround: skip the front page free, limited

Bookmark the subreddits you actually read, or build a custom feed with only those communities and use that as your starting point. The old design at old.reddit.com is also calmer, if sparser.

This works as long as your discipline does. The moment you click the Reddit logo, the feed is back and as endless as ever.

2. Remove the feed with an extension free, all or nothing

News Feed Eradicator supports Reddit and empties the home feed. uBlock Origin's element picker can hide the feed and the sidebar on the new design.

It works, and it is free. The usual trade-off applies: what is removed is gone until you toggle the extension, and Reddit's frequent redesigns break removal rules from time to time.

3. Blur the feed and sidebar, keep subreddits and comments gentler

Softspot's Reddit preset blurs the home and popular feed and the right sidebar with one click each. Individual subreddits, comment threads, search, and your inbox all stay normal, because the page is intact underneath the blur.

Want a look after all? Hover and hold the peek button. It reveals for ten seconds and then blurs again on its own.

On the old design at old.reddit.com the presets do not apply, but the picker does: press Alt+B, click the feed, done.

How to set it up

  1. 1Install Softspot from the Chrome Web Store. It is free on two sites, and it asks for no site access until you blur something.
  2. 2Open the site, click the Softspot icon in your toolbar, and press + Blur next to Home / Popular feed and Right sidebar.
  3. 3Done. It stays blurred on every visit. To blur anything else on the page, press Alt+B and click it.

Which should you pick?

Built-in options if you want a lighter feed and do not mind it creeping back.
A removal extension if you never want to see it again and are fine with it being gone for good.
Softspot if you want it out of your face but still there when you genuinely need it, with the rest of the site working normally.

Questions people ask

Can I still open subreddits and read comments?

Yes. Only the front-page feed and the sidebar are blurred. Everything you navigate to on purpose behaves normally.

Does it work on the Reddit app?

No. Extensions run in desktop Chrome and Edge only. On mobile, a custom feed of your favourite subreddits is the closest thing.
